Powering Tanzania’s Digital Future: Nationwide ICT Backbone Expansion Launched
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has officially launched the expansion of the National ICT Broadband Backbone to 85 districts, alongside the handover of the backbone infrastructure to TTCL, which was previously managed by a consortium of telecom operators (Yas, Vodacom, and Airtel).
Speaking during the launch, the President emphasized that the National ICT Backbone is a critical pillar of the country’s economy and national development, as well as a key component for national security. She called upon TTCL to ensure the infrastructure is well protected and sustainably maintained for the benefit of the nation.
Currently, the National ICT Backbone spans 15,167 kilometers, connecting all regions and reaching 121 out of 139 districts in mainland Tanzania. The remaining 18 districts are expected to be connected by December 2026, alongside the completion of a cross-border connectivity project linking Tanzania to the Democratic Republic of Congo by April 2027.
This project plays a vital role in advancing ICT development, accelerating economic growth, and improving public service delivery through digital systems.
The launch also took place alongside with the inauguration of 758 mobile communication towers, held at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre in Dodoma on April 10, 2026.
